Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon follows the story of Madeline Whittier, a 17-year-old girl who has spent her entire life confined to her home due to a rare illness called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). This condition makes her highly vulnerable to infections, so her mother, a doctor, ensures that their house remains a completely controlled, sterile environment. Madeline has accepted her isolated life, spending her time reading books, taking online classes, and interacting only with her mother and her nurse, Carla. However, everything changes when a new family moves in next door, and she meets Olly, a charismatic and adventurous boy who quickly piques her curiosity. Their connection deepens through messages and secret meetings, making Madeline question the life she has always known. As she falls in love with Olly, she begins to crave the world beyond her home, yearning for real experiences despite the risks involved.

Determined to experience life firsthand, Madeline makes a daring decision to leave her house and go on an adventure with Olly, risking everything for love. Their journey takes them to Hawaii, where she revels in the beauty of the outside world for the first time. However, things take a shocking turn when she falls seriously ill, leading to a revelation that shakes the very foundation of her existence. She discovers that she was never actually sick—her mother had fabricated her illness due to trauma from losing her husband and son years earlier. This revelation forces Madeline to confront her mother’s psychological instability and reclaim her stolen life. Though heartbroken by the deception, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and independence, determined to live her life fully and embrace the future she now knows she deserves.
