Set in the 1970s, The Great Alone tells the story of Leni Allbright, a young girl whose family is struggling to heal from the trauma of her father, Ernt, a Vietnam War veteran. After his return from the war, Ernt becomes increasingly volatile, haunted by the horrors of his experiences, and prone to violent outbursts. In search of a fresh start, Ernt decides to move his family to Alaska, where they will live in isolation, hoping the remote wilderness will provide the peace they need. However, life in the Alaskan wilderness proves to be far more dangerous than they anticipated. While Leni and her mother, Cora, try to make the best of the situation, they soon discover that the beauty of Alaska masks its deadly challenges.

As they endure the harsh realities of life in the wild, Leni begins to come of age in a place where survival depends not only on physical endurance but on mental strength and resilience. Throughout the story, Leni’s relationship with her parents becomes increasingly strained, especially as she witnesses her father’s unraveling mental state. Amidst the dangers of the wilderness, Leni forms a deep and meaningful bond with Matthew, a local boy who teaches her the value of love and survival. The novel explores themes of survival, trauma, love, and the strength of the human spirit, as Leni and her family fight to endure the brutal environment and their own inner demons, ultimately finding hope in the unlikeliest of places.
