Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman is a historical novel set in medieval England. It follows the life of 14-year-old Catherine, a spirited and witty girl who lives in a small, rural manor with her overbearing father, her sickly mother, and a variety of eccentric servants. Catherine, whose nickname is Birdy, spends much of her time trying to escape the confines of her arranged life, especially the looming threat of an unwanted marriage. The story is told through her witty and sometimes sarcastic journal entries, where she documents her thoughts on love, family, society, and her own growing desire for independence. As she deals with the pressure of her father’s expectations and the constraints of the medieval world, she also contemplates what it means to be a woman in a society where her choices are limited.

The novel explores themes of identity, freedom, and the roles women were expected to play during the Middle Ages. Despite her father's insistence on finding her a husband, Catherine refuses to conform to the traditional expectations of a young woman in her time. She is constantly at odds with the idea of marriage, viewing it as a trap that will take away her freedom. Throughout the story, Catherine matures as she navigates her relationships with her family and the suitors her father presents. The novel’s humor and heart come from Catherine’s sharp observations and her internal struggle between duty and desire for self-determination. Ultimately, Catherine Called Birdy is a story about self-discovery, the power of resilience, and the courage it takes to carve out one’s own path in a restrictive world.
