Sarah’s Key is a historical and contemporary novel that intertwines two different narratives. One storyline takes place in 1942, during the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup, when thousands of Jewish families in Paris were arrested by the French police and sent to concentration camps. It centers on a young Jewish girl named Sarah Starzynski, who locks her younger brother in a cupboard, believing she will return to free him once she and her family are released. However, she is unable to return in time, and the fate of her brother becomes an enduring mystery. The book delves into Sarah’s tragic story, which remains a haunting memory for years to come.
The second narrative unfolds in 2002, when an American journalist named Julia Jarmond, who is living in Paris, investigates the history behind the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup as part of a story for a magazine. During her research, she discovers the disturbing past of the apartment building where her in-laws live, which was once home to Sarah's family. Julia's own life is deeply impacted by the discovery, and her quest to uncover the truth about Sarah’s fate leads her to confront painful truths about her own family, identity, and the collective memory of France's role in the Holocaust. The novel examines themes of guilt, memory, and the long-lasting effects of historical trauma.
