The Immortalists follows the lives of four Jewish siblings—Klara, Daniel, Varya, and Simon—who, as children, visit a fortune teller in New York’s Lower East Side. The fortune teller predicts the exact dates of their deaths, which becomes a haunting, defining moment for each of them. The novel spans several decades, tracking the siblings' divergent paths as they grapple with the impact of knowing their fates. Klara, a talented magician, chases a dream of performing on stage, but her life is shaped by love, loss, and illness. Daniel, a soldier in the Army, struggles with the emotional toll of war, while Varya, a scientist, focuses on the lengths people will go to for control over their lives. Simon, the youngest, embarks on a journey of self-discovery in the world of dance and struggles with his identity and sexuality.

As the story unfolds, each sibling’s life is profoundly shaped by the knowledge of their inevitable deaths, and the novel explores the emotional and philosophical questions that arise from this knowledge. The book delves into themes of fate versus free will, love and loss, the choices that shape our lives, and how the fear of death can both limit and motivate people. Through these rich, emotionally complex characters, The Immortalists examines how the knowledge of death alters the trajectory of each life and the ways in which family bonds can both support and stifle. It ultimately raises poignant questions about the way we live when we know that time is limited, and how one’s fate can be intertwined with the lives of those closest to us.
