Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse is a historical fiction novel set during the 1930s, in the midst of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in the United States. The story is told from the perspective of Billie Jo Kelby, a 14-year-old girl who lives on a farm in Oklahoma.
