Morgan Gower, the central character in Morgan's Passing, is an eccentric and charismatic man living in Baltimore. Despite being a married father of six, Morgan leads a double life fueled by his insatiable imagination and need for escape. He works at his family's hardware store but spends his free time assuming various personas and adopting fake identities, which allow him to experience life in different ways. Morgan’s desire to feel special and different, however, hides a deep dissatisfaction with his mundane reality. His charm and humor draw people to him, but his habit of weaving lies and creating alternate realities also distances him from true intimacy and self-acceptance. This inner conflict drives the story as he struggles to reconcile the man he pretends to be with the man he truly is.

The novel takes a turn when Morgan encounters a young couple, Emily and Leon, whose dynamic sparks a significant change in his life. Fascinated by their vitality and ambition, Morgan becomes enmeshed in their world, infatuated with Emily in particular. His involvement with them becomes a catalyst for examining his own choices, responsibilities, and desires. Tyler’s exploration of Morgan’s inner life reveals themes of identity, self-delusion, and the yearning for connection. Through her signature attention to the subtleties of human relationships, Tyler paints a vivid picture of Morgan’s struggles, blending humor and melancholy as she delves into the complexities of family, love, and individuality.
