Set during World War II, N or M? follows middle-aged couple Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, who are recruited by British intelligence to track down two highly dangerous enemy agents, codenamed "N" and "M." The agents are believed to be operating within Britain, sabotaging the war effort. The couple is sent to a seaside boarding house, Sans Souci, where the agents are suspected to be hiding in plain sight among the other guests. Using their wit, intuition, and experience, Tommy and Tuppence navigate a web of deceit and tension as they try to identify the spies. Each of the guests at the boarding house, ranging from a retired major to a single mother and her child, seems to have something to hide, adding layers of complexity to the mystery.

As Tommy and Tuppence dig deeper, they face danger at every turn, including coded messages, hidden weapons, and unexpected betrayals. Their teamwork and unorthodox methods allow them to unravel the truth about N and M, ultimately exposing the real enemy agents and thwarting their plans. The novel combines humor, intrigue, and suspense, showcasing Agatha Christie’s mastery in creating compelling characters and unpredictable twists. It reflects the paranoia and uncertainty of the wartime era, while also highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of ordinary people taking extraordinary risks.
