"Bleeding Violet" by Dia Reeves is a young adult novel that follows Hanna, a biracial, bicultural teenager with bipolar disorder and a tendency toward hallucinations. Hanna has led a life marked by mental illness and struggles with violent tendencies. Following the death of her Finnish father, with whom she converses in her head when off her medication, Hanna runs away from her aunt's house to avoid being sent back to a mental institution.
Hanna's journey leads her to Portero, Texas, in search of her mother, Rosalee, whom she has never met since Rosalee sent Hanna and her father away when Hanna was a baby. Hanna's arrival in Portero is met with a cold reception from Rosalee, who is determined to send her away. Despite this, Hanna strikes a deal with her mother to stay for two weeks, provided she can adapt to the strange and harsh reality of Portero.
Portero is no ordinary town; it is filled with hidden doors that open to other worlds and creatures like tentacle-bearing leeches and river ghosts. Its residents, accustomed to these oddities, live under the protection of the Mortmaine hunters. Hanna finds herself struggling to fit in, particularly with the in-crowd led by Wyatt, a Mortmaine. Despite the town's oddities and her mother's reluctance, Hanna is determined to make a place for herself in Portero.
The novel is characterized by its surreal and bizarre elements, blending the challenges of teenage life with the supernatural. Hanna's quest for acceptance and love from her mother drives the plot, revealing deep-seated emotions and issues within the characters. The novel explores themes of identity, acceptance, mental illness, and the complexities of mother-daughter relationships, all set against the backdrop of a surreal, dark, and sometimes violent world. "Bleeding Violet" is a unique and character-driven story, offering a blend of realism and fantasy.
