The story is set in Paris in 1482 and revolves around the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a symbol of Gothic architecture and the heart of the city. The protagonist, Quasimodo, is the hunchbacked bell-ringer of the cathedral, whose deformity makes him the target of ridicule and rejection by society. Despite his appearance, Quasimodo has a sensitive nature and a deep love for beauty.

The plot thickens when Esmeralda, a beautiful and free-spirited young Romani girl, enters Quasimodo's life. She becomes the object of obsession for Claude Frollo, the archdeacon, a man consumed by his passions and his internal struggle between desire and morality. Frollo is drawn to Esmeralda, but his love turns into a dangerous obsession that leads him to dark deeds.

Meanwhile, Phoebus, a dashing captain of the guard, is also interested in Esmeralda, but his love is superficial and selfish. Throughout the novel, the paths of these characters intertwine in a series of tragic events, where love, betrayal, and sacrifice become intertwined.
